How to Choose Wedding Colours

After meeting with a Bride and Groom today that haven’t decided on their colours yet, I started thinking about how couples go about selecting a wedding colour scheme. What I thought was a “simple” task in the world of wedding planning may not be so “simple”, after all!

The colour palette for the wedding sets the tone for the entire day, so choosing your colours is an important part of planning. Different colours represent different things for different people… favourites, cultural significance, season, a particular theme, mood, and emotions. Colour impacts photographs and videos, depending on lighting and skin tones. There are many factors to consider!

Here are some questions to ask yourself when you’re thinking about your wedding colour palette.

  • What are your (you and your fiancé(e)’s) favourite colours?

  • Are there any colours that represent your culture or have personal significance that you want to integrate into your palette?

  • Do you want your colours to complement the season your wedding will take place in?

  • Does your wedding have a theme or style? Which colours correspond with your theme or style?

  • Do you want to use colour to evoke emotions? (ex. blue = calming, red = passionate and energetic, green = natural and fresh)

When I think of a colour palette, I think of paint swatches. Sometimes, couples decide to choose one colour and use various shades of it, like a paint swatch - monochromatic. (This is actually what I did for my wedding!) Alternatively, couples often choose one or two main/primary colours for the wedding, adding a complementary or contrasting colour to enhance the primary colour(s). An accent colour is another option - adding small pops of accent colours for details and decorations.

There are a few ways you can explore colour combinations:

  • Colour swatches - paper (paint), fabric, or digital (Pinterest)

  • Online colour palette generators or apps

  • Look at decor samples/ideas, such as flowers, linens, and stationery

  • Work with a Designer or Decor Stylist for expert advice

  • Ask your photographer which colours photograph best, based on if your photos will be indoors or outdoors, lighting, etc.

Choosing your colour palette may even depend on factors out of your control, such as availability of decor items, venue lighting, or venue colours.

By considering all factors, couples can choose wedding colors that are both meaningful and visually appealing, ensuring a cohesive and memorable celebration. The best part is that it’s your wedding, so as long as you like the colours you choose, it will be absolutely beautiful!
